Merced County, CA – On the morning of Wednesday, August 5, 2026, a collision between a CHP patrol vehicle and a big rig resulted in a California Highway Patrol officer being airlifted with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to FOX40.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 7:24 AM on State Route 59, approximately half a mile north of Turlock Road, north of Merced.
Authorities said the officer, driving a marked CHP Mobile Road Enforcement pickup truck, was traveling southbound on State Route 59 when he made a U-turn as a tractor-trailer traveling northbound approached. The truck struck the right side of the patrol vehicle and pushed it to the side of the highway.
First responders extricated the officer from his vehicle before he was airlifted to a local hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
State Route 59 was closed in the area, with reopening expected by 2:00 PM. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and expect delays.
The CHP Central Division’s accident investigation team is examining the crash. The cause has not yet been determined, though alcohol or drugs are not suspected to have been factors.
