Copus Rd Crash Kills 3, Injures 4 in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Friday, August 28, 2026, a head-on collision resulted in three fatalities and left four others critically injured, according to KBAK and CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place shortly after 5:00 AM on Copus Road, near 14900 Copus Road west of Old River Road.

Authorities have stated that, immediately preceding the accident, a man from Taft was traveling eastbound on Copus in a 2004 Nissan Sentra, while a 60-year-old man approached from the other direction in a 2005 Honda Odyssey. For reasons still yet to be determined, the Nissan reportedly crossed the center line to enter the westbound lane of Copus Road, leading to the fatal collision. The impact left both vehicles blocking the travel lanes.

Three occupants of the Nissan, including the driver and two passengers, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers of the Nissan received non-life-threatening injuries. As for the Honda, its driver and passenger were also injured by the crash.

Road crews and law enforcement closed Copus Road in both directions to facilitate the rescue operation, coroner response, and vehicle removal.

Authorities have not yet stated whether excessive speed or driving under the influence were factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

Bakersfield Head-On Collisions and Wrongful Death Claims

When a head-on collision takes place, investigators examine evidence at the crash site to determine what factors may have led to the accident. Because California operates under the principle of comparative negligence, liability for the accident and its resulting injuries can be shared among multiple parties.

The occupants of the Honda may have grounds to make a personal injury claim with the insurance provider of the Nissan driver, even though his lost his life in the event. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident.

The passengers of the Nissan who survived may also have grounds to make a personal injury claim against their driver. The families of the Nissan passengers who lost their lives may have grounds to make a wrongful death claim with the driver’s insurer, which can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship they provided.

If the negligence of an outside party, such as the vehicle manufacturer or a government entity responsible for road maintenance, also contributed to this fatal accident, the family of the Nissan driver may have grounds for a wrongful death claim against those parties as well.
