Bakersfield, CA – On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a collision between an ambulance and a Caltrans vehicle resulted in the death of a patient being transported, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place on northbound Interstate 5.
Authorities said the crash occurred within a traffic closure caused by an earlier Amazon big rig fire that had reduced traffic to one open lane. As the ambulance approached the congested area while transporting a patient undergoing CPR, it reportedly crashed into the back of a Caltrans vehicle for reasons still under investigation. Afterward, the Caltrans worker involved reported a complaint of pain.
A medical aircraft was requested for the patient inside the ambulance. However, by the time the air ambulance arrived, the patient had been pronounced dead. The helicopter then departed within minutes without transporting the patient. Authorities awaited the coroner’s response to the scene.
It was not immediately known what medical emergency had prompted the patient’s original transport, although the ambulance had been traveling from south to north at the time of the crash.
The Amazon semi-truck involved in the earlier fire was cleared from the scene, though one lane remained closed following the second collision before all northbound lanes reopened.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Bakersfield Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even where the circumstances of a crash within an active emergency scene are still under investigation, surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party contributed to the fatal outcome. Investigators with California law enforcement examine the actions of both drivers and the conditions of the closure to determine what role each may have played.
Regardless of the findings, the patient’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
