Monterey, CA – On Thursday, July 30, 2026, a single-vehicle motorcycle collision resulted in the death of Devin Reyes, 21, of Seaside, according to KSBW.
The Monterey Police Department reports that the accident took place at the Lighthouse Tunnel.
Authorities said Reyes crashed into a light pole for reasons still under investigation, with the motorcycle coming to rest in the center divider near the tunnel. He was transported to Natividad Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office formally identified him following his death.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion in the surrounding area, prompting authorities to urge drivers to avoid the Lighthouse Tunnel and Lighthouse Curve while emergency crews responded. Pacific Grove police noted the crash impacted traffic throughout the city. The tunnel later reopened, though delays continued for some time.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Monterey Motorcycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a rider is found partially at fault for an accident, his surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as a road hazard or improperly placed roadway fixture, contributed to the crash. Investigators with California law enforcement examine roadway conditions, lighting, and other factors to determine what role outside conditions may have played.
Regardless of the findings, Reyes’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
