Fresno County, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, 2026, a head-on collision resulting from a driver failing to stop at a stop sign left an elderly woman dead and four others hospitalized near Millerton Lake, according to ABC30, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place just before 1:00 PM on Auberry Road at the intersection of Old Millerton Road.
Authorities said an 18-year-old Clovis woman was driving a white Honda sedan toward the intersection and failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The Honda collided head-on with a brown Toyota SUV driven by an 88-year-old Prather man, sending both vehicles into a nearby embankment. CAL FIRE responded to the scene.
An elderly female passenger in the Toyota died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota and two other passengers were hospitalized with injuries ranging from moderate to major. The 18-year-old driver of the Honda was also hospitalized with major injuries.
Fresno County Roads was contacted for a hard closure while investigators processed the scene. An evidence tow was requested for one of the vehicles, along with a separate tow for recovery purposes. Media arrived on scene during the investigation, accessing the area on foot from Old Millerton Road. The roadway was reopened at approximately 4:17 PM.
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The identities of those involved had not been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Stop Sign Laws
California law requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a Stop sign (California Vehicle Code 22450). Drivers may only enter the intersection when it appears safe for all parties to do so (California Vehicle Code 21802).
