UPDATE: Fresno Motorcyclist Richard Cortes ID’ed as Victim of Hit-and-Run near Olive, Rowell Ave

Fresno, CA – On the evening of Sunday, May 25, 2026, a hit-and-run resulted in the death of motorcyclist Richard Cortes and the arrest of Yzamar Mendez, 33, according to ABC30.

The Fresno Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:00 PM near Olive and Rowell Avenues.

Authorities said Cortes was riding his motorcycle westbound on Olive Avenue when a silver Jeep allegedly driven by Mendez made a left turn and pulled out in front of him, causing a collision.

Cortes was transported to a local hospital with major injuries to his head, neck, and back. He was placed in an induced coma and was unable to breathe on his own. Cortes died over the weekend, with his family confirming his death.

Mendez reportedly fled the scene following the collision but returned while officers were still investigating the crash and was taken into custody. She was booked into jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established by the family to assist with hospital costs and funeral expenses. The investigation remains ongoing.

California Hit-and-Run Laws

California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.

Wrongful Death Claim

Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of support for dependents of the deceased.
