San Joaquin County, CA – On the morning of Tuesday, May 5, 2026, a collision between two big rigs resulted in the death of a mechanic who was working on a disabled vehicle, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 6:18 AM on northbound Interstate 5 north of Peltier Road near Acampo.
Authorities said the driver of a white Volvo big rig was traveling in the number two lane when he fell asleep at the wheel, allowing the vehicle to drift to the right and strike a gray disabled big rig that was stopped on the shoulder.
A mechanic who was working underneath the disabled big rig at the time of the collision was struck by the undercarriage as a result of the impact. The mechanic was pronounced dead at the scene.
Caltrans was notified, and a lane closure was implemented for the number two lane of northbound Interstate 5, with a SigAlert issued for a minimum of two hours, and motorists were advised to expect significant delays.
Tow trucks were requested for multiple vehicles, including a heavy-duty wrecker for the big rigs involved. The disabled truck and trailer were carrying approximately 24,000 pounds of cardboard and sustained front-end damage.
A Ram 3500 work truck at the scene was also towed. All lanes were fully reopened at approximately 10:48 AM.
The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a wrongful death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
