DUI Suspected in Fatal Central Expy, Commercial St in Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale, CA – On the evening of Thursday, April 9, 2026, a suspected DUI collision resulted in the death of a woman and the arrest of the other driver, according to KRON.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety reports that the accident took place around 10:55 PM at Central Expressway and Commercial Street.

Authorities said the crash involved a sedan and a truck. Emergency personnel arrived to find a woman in her 50s unresponsive and trapped inside her vehicle. Responders extricated her from the wreckage, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a man in his 30s, was transported to Valley Medical Center for evaluation. During the investigation, the man refused to provide a statement or a blood sample to investigators. 

Authorities obtained a search warrant and collected a blood sample, after which the man was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence with additional charges pending.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
