Stanislaus County, CA – Rosa Renteria, 80, of Delhi, has been identified as the woman who lost her life in a collision on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in which her husband Jose Renteria, 76, was injured, according to the Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:31 PM at Gratton Road and East Avenue near Denair.
Authorities said a 16-year-old girl from El Dorado Hills was driving southbound on Gratton Road when she approached a stop sign at East Avenue and allegedly failed to yield the right of way.
Jose Renteria was driving westbound on East Avenue when the Honda sedan he was operating was struck broadside on the left side by the Chevrolet pickup truck driven by the teen.
Emergency crews arrived to find both vehicles with major damage. Jose Renteria was transported to Memorial Medical Center with major injuries. Rosa Renteria, who was a passenger in the Honda, was transported to Doctors Medical Center, where she subsequently died from her injuries.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office formally identified her following her death. The teen driver sustained injuries and was not hospitalized. A 77-year-old male passenger in the pickup truck from Winton was not injured.
All occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been contributing factors. The California Highway Patrol said there are no new updates in the investigation at this time.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Failure to Yield
In California, as in other states, “failure to yield” means that you didn’t give the right of way to the right person at the right time. As such, failure to yield or stop is closely related to the “right of way.” When a motorist fails to yield, stop or otherwise avoid an accident and causes a crash, he or she can be held liable for injuries and damages suffered by a victim.
Wrongful Death Claim
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
