San Jose, CA – In the early hours of Friday, March 6, 2026, a pedestrian hit-and-run resulted in the death of a 63-year-old San Jose woman, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:29 AM on the off-ramp leading from northbound Interstate 680 to Alum Rock Avenue.
Authorities said the woman was found lying in the middle of the off-ramp with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Dispatch logs noted a white Tesla and a dark-colored vehicle among those stopped on the right shoulder of the ramp at the time of the initial report, though it was not immediately determined which vehicle was involved in the striking. Three additional vehicles were pulled over on the shoulder, with occupants out of their cars checking on the pedestrian.
San Jose Fire Department requested that CHP block the off-ramp while emergency personnel attended to the victim. The woman was transported to a regional medical center with major injuries, where she was subsequently pronounced deceased. The off-ramp was reopened shortly after, with flares left in place to dissipate with traffic.
The collision was investigated as a hit-and-run, with the striking vehicle having fled the scene. Caltrans and the Department of Transportation Coordination Center were notified during the response. The California Highway Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact the CHP San Jose Area Office.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
