Santa Maria, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, March 13, 2026, a tragic pedestrian collision resulted in the death of a 1-year-old child and left the child’s mother critically injured, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The Santa Maria Police Department reports that the accident took place just before 3:00 PM at the intersection of North Broadway and Fesler Street.
Authorities said a 30-year-old woman was pushing a young child in a stroller and attempting to cross Broadway on the west side of the intersection when an 18-year-old Santa Maria resident, driving a vehicle stopped in an eastbound lane of Fesler Street, began making a right-hand turn onto Broadway and struck both pedestrians.
The mother and child were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with major injuries. The child was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital. The full extent of the mother’s injuries had not been determined at the time of reporting, though authorities confirmed she sustained major injuries.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigating officers. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision. The identities of those involved had not been released at the time of reporting.
The Santa Maria Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a wrongful death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
