Alejandro Covarrubias, 22, of Altadena, Named in Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-5 near Templin Hwy

San Luis Obispo County, CA – On the evening of Friday, February 27, 2026, a pedestrian hit-and-run resulted in the death of Alejandro Covarrubias, 22, of Altadena, according to  KBAK.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:20 PM on southbound Interstate 5 south of Templin Highway.

Authorities said Covarrubias was standing outside his vehicle on the freeway when he was struck by a passing vehicle. Officers responded and found him dead at the scene. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner formally identified him following the crash.

The driver of the striking vehicle did not remain at the scene and fled without stopping. The vehicle involved has not been identified. The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating the incident and is seeking witnesses who may have been traveling in the area at the time of the crash, including those with dash-mounted camera footage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Newhall Area Office.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established in Covarrubias’s memory to help raise funds for his family to lay him to rest.

California Hit-and-Run Laws

California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
