Gustine, CA – On the morning of Sunday, February 8, 2026, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office discovered a body in the Delta-Mendota Canal that may belong to Lupita Ontiveros, 21, of Stockton, according to The Modesto Bee.
Ontiveros was reportedly a passenger when the dune buggy crashed into the canal on Wednesday, January 28, around 12:06 AM near Highway 140 and Gravel Pit Road.
The body was recovered at about 10:15 AM near Whitworth Road and Cottonwood Road, approximately seven miles from the crash site, after a report of a body in the water prompted a response from the Sheriff’s Office Water Recovery and Rescue Team. Positive identification is pending through the Merced County Coroner’s Office, and next of kin notification is expected prior to the public release of confirmation.
Investigators stated that two other passengers were able to exit the submerged vehicle and reach safety but sustained moderate injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
The driver, Elixandro Naranjo Miranda, 21, of Patterson, was later arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and related charges after authorities said he fled the scene following the crash.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and resulting injuries.
