Toddler Killed in Pedestrian Crash at Trader Joe’s near Willow, Nees Ave in Clovis

Clovis, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, January 3, 2026, a toddler was struck by a pickup truck in a suspected DUI collision in a parking lot near a Trader Joe’s, according to the KSEE.

Police reported that officers were dispatched at approximately 2:20 PM to the Trader Joe’s parking lot near the intersection of Willow and Nees avenues following reports that a child had been run over by a truck. Emergency responders arrived and assessed the scene.

Authorities said the toddler was awake and alert when officers arrived, but had sustained moderate injuries. The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

Police stated that the toddler’s mother was also struck by the truck during the incident. She was evaluated at the scene and did not suffer injuries.

Investigators identified the driver as 62-year-old Steve Myer of Prather. Police said Myer remained at the scene following the collision and was later arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.

Officers closed off a portion of the parking lot as part of the investigation. Police indicated that standard investigative procedures are ongoing, including documentation of the scene and review of the circumstances leading up to the collision.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
