Sacramento, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, a pedestrian was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Fruitridge Road near 49th Street, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Sacramento Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:45 PM following reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision. Upon arrival, first responders located an adult male lying in the roadway with serious injuries.
The pedestrian was provided emergency medical care at the scene and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Authorities said the man later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police reported that there was no indication drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
Officers secured the area while evidence was documented and statements were collected as part of the investigation. Traffic controls were implemented to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and to preserve the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity after next of kin have been notified. Police noted the death is believed to be the first pedestrian fatality in the city and county in 2026.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities encouraged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Sacramento Police Department.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
