Sutter County, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a wrong-way collision on State Route 70 resulted in fatal injuries to a 23-year-old man and sent a woman and an infant to the hospital, according to The Sacramento Bee, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 7:30 PM on southbound State Route 70 just south of Striplin Road.
Investigators stated that a white Volkswagen Tiguan was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided with a southbound Toyota Corolla. Fog was present in the area at the time of the collision.
The driver of the Toyota, identified by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office as Miguel Sigala-Flores, 23, of Willows, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital along with her infant passenger. The child’s condition was not immediately known.
CHP officials said dispatchers had received a report of a wrong-way driver matching the Volkswagen’s description prior to the crash. Southbound lanes were blocked during the investigation, and traffic was diverted while evidence was collected and the roadway was cleared.
The collision remains under investigation as CHP continues to review contributing factors.
