Tracy, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, a big rig driver was killed in a traffic collision involving another big rig on westbound Interstate 580, east of International Parkway, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 AM on westbound I-580. Officers were dispatched after receiving reports of a collision involving commercial vehicles blocking multiple lanes of traffic.
Investigators determined that a white Volvo big rig with a trailer was traveling westbound in the No. 2 lane when it collided with the rear of another big rig and trailer that was stopped in traffic. The force of the impact pushed both trucks leftward across all westbound lanes and into the center median.
The driver of the Volvo became pinned inside the cab as a result of the collision. Emergency personnel responded and attempted lifesaving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
CHP confirmed that the driver of the other big rig was not injured. No arrests were made in connection with the crash.
Following the collision, CHP requested assistance from the fire department, heavy-duty tow services, and the California Department of Transportation. A SigAlert was issued, and all westbound lanes were closed for several hours to allow responders to secure the scene, conduct the investigation, and remove the damaged vehicles.
The coroner was notified and responded to the scene. Evidence tows were ordered, and CHP officers documented vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and traffic patterns prior to the collision.
Authorities stated it is unknown whether drugs, alcohol, or driver distraction were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
