Amador County, CA – On the afternoon of Sunday, January 19, 2026, a bicycle collision resulted in fatal injuries to a 78-year-old Lodi man, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 3:10 PM. According to investigators, Bennie Weber, 78, of Lodi, was riding his bicycle northbound on Buena Vista Road when he attempted to make a left turn onto Camanche Parkway North.
At the same time, a 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling in the same direction allegedly attempted to pass. As Weber began his turn, the front right side of the vehicle struck the bicycle, causing Weber to suffer critical injuries.
Emergency responders arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but Weber was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
CHP officials stated that no arrests have been made and that alcohol or drugs are not suspected at this time. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by bicycle and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
