Nikolay Shipilov, 80, Dies after Pedestrian Crash at Linda Rio, Tiber Dr in Sacramento

Sacramento, CA – A pedestrian identified as Nikolay Shipilov, 80, lost his life on Saturday, September 27, 2025, due to injuries received after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday, July 24, according to ABC10.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:10 AM near the intersection of Linda Rio Drive and Tiber Drive.

Authorities said Shipilov was walking west along Linda Rio Drive and began crossing Tiber Drive at an unmarked crosswalk when a Chevrolet van, turning right from Linda Rio Drive onto Tiber Drive, appeared to have failed to yield. Shipilov was transported to a hospital with serious injuries and died just over two months later.

Police confirmed the driver of the Chevrolet van was not injured and remained at the scene. As of the latest update, the driver has not been arrested. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision in coordination with the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Records from the coroner’s office show that Shipilov’s death was initially classified as a criminal motor vehicle accident. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate criminal charges will be recommended to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.

Statute of Limitations & Wrongful Death Claims

Victims of motor vehicle accidents typically have up to two years after the accident in order to file a claim. However, in a Wrongful Death Claim, that timer only starts after the victim has lost their life, which can happen well after the accident that caused their injuries.
