San Jose, CA – In the early morning of Sunday, August 31, 2025, a person in a wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle in South San Jose, according to Bay City News.
The San Jose Police Department reports that the collision occurred around 2:34 AM at the intersection of Hayes Avenue and Lily Ann Way.
Investigators said a 2017 silver Mercedes sedan traveled northbound on Lily Ann Way when it hit a man in a wheelchair on the north curb of Hayes Avenue. After the impact, the vehicle continued forward and crashed into an iron fence. Emergency responders transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not yet released his identity, pending notification of family members.
The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene immediately after the crash. Officers located him minutes later at a nearby residence. They arrested the man and booked him into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, manslaughter, and additional charges.
Police confirmed this marks San Jose’s 22nd fatal crash of the year, with 12 involving pedestrians.
