San Jose, CA – On the morning of Monday, September 8, 2025, Monica Ibarra, 52, of San Francisco, was struck dead while riding an electric scooter, according to KRON.
The San Jose Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:00 AM at the intersection of Santa Clara Street and Cahill Street, near the SAP Center.
Investigators determined that Ibarra was riding her scooter northbound across Santa Clara Street in a marked crosswalk when a black 2021 Ram pickup truck struck her. The impact threw her to the roadway, and emergency personnel quickly transported her to a nearby hospital. Doctors pronounced her deceased shortly after arrival.
Authorities stated that the driver of the pickup fled the scene immediately after the crash. Officers later located the truck abandoned at another location. Police determined the vehicle had been stolen before the collision. Detectives continue to search for the individual responsible.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner formally identified Ibarra later that day and notified her family. Officials reported that her death marked the 24th fatal traffic collision in San Jose so far in 2025.
Police closed Santa Clara Street between Stockton Avenue and Barack Obama Boulevard for several hours while officers investigated and Caltrans crews managed traffic. Authorities reopened the roadway after clearing the scene.
The San Jose Police Department urges anyone with information about the crash to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit as the search for the driver continues.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
