Patterson, CA – In the late evening of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, an 84-year-old man died in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 5 south of Sperry Avenue, according to The Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:10 PM along the northbound lanes of I-5 near Patterson.
Authorities said the man, a resident of Lamont in Kern County, had pulled his Hyundai sedan onto the right shoulder of the freeway. He left the vehicle and appeared to wave at passing drivers before stepping into the traffic lanes. Investigators believe he was then struck by a vehicle that continued north without stopping.
When officers arrived, they located the man in the center median with severe injuries consistent with being hit by a passing vehicle. He died at the scene. His Hyundai remained parked and unoccupied on the shoulder.
The California Highway Patrol has launched a hit-and-run investigation and urged anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved to contact their Modesto office.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
