San Jose, CA – On Thursday morning, September 18, 2025, a VTA light-rail train struck a box truck in San Jose, sending two people to the hospital with minor injuries, according to NBC Bay Area.
The San Jose Fire Department said the crash happened at about 8:55 AM near North First Street and Interstate 880 after multiple 911 calls reported the collision. Responders arrived quickly and found the truck damaged in the roadway alongside the light-rail train.
According to investigations, the driver of the white box truck appeared to have attempted an illegal U-turn just before the train hit the vehicle. The collision left the driver and passenger of the truck with injuries. Paramedics evaluated both victims at the scene and then transported them for additional medical care.
Officials confirmed that about 40 passengers were riding the train when the crash occurred. None of those passengers reported injuries, and crews helped them safely transfer off the train while the scene remained active.
VTA arranged a bus bridge to move riders between the Metro and Civic Center stations while crews cleared the tracks and inspected the train for damage. Rail service resumed after the roadway and rail line were declared safe.
The San Jose Fire Department continues to investigate the crash to determine what led to the truck’s maneuver and the resulting collision.
