Azmeret Mayall, 6, Killed in Bakersfield Crash at Cottonwood Rd, East Panama Ln; DUI Suspect Cesar Magana, 20, Arrested

Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Sunday, September 28, 2025, a suspected DUI collision in southeast Bakersfield left Azmeret Mayall, 6, with fatal injuries, according to KBAK.

The Bakersfield Police Department reports that the accident took place around 7:41 AM near the intersection of Cottonwood Road and East Panama Lane, in the 2600 block of East Panama Lane.

Police said a black sedan and a white SUV were traveling westbound when the sedan allegedly rear-ended the SUV at high speed. The impact caused the SUV to roll over and the sedan to leave the roadway, crashing into a nearby vineyard.

Emergency personnel transported three victims from the SUV to a local hospital. The driver of the SUV, a woman, and an infant passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries. Azmeret sustained major injuries and was transferred to Orange County Children’s Hospital, where she died from the injuries the following morning.

The driver of the sedan, Cesar Magana-Mendoza, 20, showed signs of impairment and was arrested. Police booked him after medical clearance, and charges have been updated to include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and ask anyone with information to contact the Bakersfield Police Department.

The Schwind family has opened a GoFundMe to raise money following Azmeret’s passing.

Wrongful Death Claims

Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
