Bakersfield Bicyclist Killed in Crash at Mohawk St, Tomer Way

Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, a collision with a vehicle caused fatal injuries to a bicyclist, according to KGET.

The Bakersfield Police Department reports that the accident took place around 6:19 AM at the intersection of Mohawk Street and Tomer Way.

Investigators said a vehicle was traveling northbound on Mohawk Street when a bicyclist traveling westbound on Tomer Way allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection. The vehicle struck the bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. The identity of the cyclist has not been released pending notification of the family.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police stated that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors in the driver’s actions. The roadway in the area consists of two lanes of traffic in each direction.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Bakersfield Police Department.

Stop Sign Laws

California Law requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a Stop sign (California Vehicle Code 22450). Drivers may only enter the intersection when it appears safe for all parties to do so (California Vehicle Code 21802).

Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
