Sacramento, CA – On the morning of Thursday, July 24, 2025, a collision between a sedan and a big rig resulted in the death of one motorist, according to The Sacramento Bee, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash took place around 8:28 AM on southbound Highway 99 near Elkhorn Boulevard, near the Greenbriar neighborhood at the northern edge of Sacramento.
According to the CHP, a blue Toyota Prius was traveling southbound on Highway 99 when it collided with a white big rig and became lodged underneath the trailer. Emergency responders from the Sacramento Fire Department arrived shortly after the incident and extricated one person from the Prius. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The incident caused significant traffic disruption in the area. The right lane of Highway 99 was closed for more than two hours as authorities conducted an investigation and cleared the scene. Caltrans District 3 confirmed that the affected lanes were reopened just after 11:00 AM.
Authorities have not released information regarding the condition of the big rig driver. No other injuries were reported. The collision remains under investigation by the CHP North Sacramento office. No contributing factors such as alcohol or drug impairment have been confirmed at this time.
