Antelope, CA – On the early morning of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, a hit-and-run collision killed a man in his 50s and his dog outside a Home Depot, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 4:30 AM near the intersection of Antelope Road and Roseville Road in the community of Antelope.
Emergency crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded to the scene following 911 calls reporting the collision.
Authorities say the victim had been walking his dog near the 5800 block of Antelope Road, just outside the entrance to a Home Depot, when both were struck by an oncoming vehicle. The impact of the crash resulted in fatal injuries to both the man and the dog. Despite the prompt arrival of emergency personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog also succumbed to its injuries shortly after the incident.
Following the collision, investigators say the driver of the vehicle continued for a short distance before abandoning the car near the intersection. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. Officials have not released a description of the driver nor confirmed whether any surveillance footage from nearby businesses captured the incident.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the identity of the victim once his next of kin have been notified. The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact CHP North Sacramento.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
