Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run on Hwy 99 near Fruitridge Rd in Sacramento

Sacramento, CA – On the early morning of Friday, June 27, 2025, a suspected hit-and-run collision on Highway 99 resulted in the death of a pedestrian, according to The Sacramento Bee, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials report that the incident took place around 5:20 AM on the southbound side of Highway 99, just north of Fruitridge Road in south Sacramento.

Emergency responders, including the Sacramento Fire Department and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, responded to the scene and located the victim’s body lying on the right-hand shoulder and partially in the slow lane.

The identity of the deceased pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. CHP officers say the driver who struck the victim fled the scene and remains at large.

All southbound lanes were temporarily closed to allow for investigation and cleanup operations. Traffic was diverted for more than an hour while crews cleared the highway and investigators collected evidence. All lanes were reopened shortly before 7:00 AM.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation and urges anyone with information about the incident or the suspect vehicle to contact their Sacramento office.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
