Albany, CA – On the morning of Friday, June 27, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 resulted in the death of a driver after their car was pushed off the elevated freeway, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred around 3:30 AM on eastbound I-80 near the Buchanan Street off-ramp in Albany.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling recklessly and allegedly caused a collision involving a Hyundai Elantra and a big rig. The impact sent the Elantra over the freeway’s edge, where it landed upside down on Buchanan Street.
The driver of the Elantra, an Oakland man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Camry, a resident of El Cerrito, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was not injured in the crash. The driver of the big rig also escaped without injury.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including the Albany Police and Fire Departments, assisted at the scene. All lanes of eastbound I-80 were closed for approximately two hours as investigators worked to clear debris, document the scene, and recover the involved vehicles. Cleanup included a hazmat response due to the severity of the impact.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
