Fiery Hwy 4, Fairview Ave Crash Kills 2 in Brentwood

Brentwood, CA – On the night of Wednesday, May 21, 2025, a head-on collision resulted in fatal injuries to two drivers, according to Bay City News, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:20 PM near the intersection of Highway 4 and Fairview Avenue, just east of Balfour Road.

Authorities say the crash involved a gray electric SUV and a gray sedan. Preliminary information suggests one of the vehicles may have crossed over the center divide before the crash occurred. Both vehicles sustained major damage, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded alongside CHP units. One of the vehicles, confirmed by officials to be an electric SUV, caught fire following the impact. Due to the dangers associated with lithium-ion battery fires, first responders were initially unable to approach the burning vehicle. Hazmat crews were later dispatched to manage toxic fumes and ongoing combustion hazards from the battery fire.

Traffic in both directions was halted for several hours, and a full closure was implemented eastbound at Balfour Road. Authorities noted that the incident area was treated as a hazardous materials site due to the electric vehicle’s compromised battery system. Emergency crews remained on scene through the night and into the early morning, with lane reopenings reported shortly after 5:20 AM Thursday.

No other occupants were confirmed in either vehicle as of the latest update, though investigations were ongoing.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
