Walnut Creek, CA – Just after midnight on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, a head-on collision involving a suspected wrong-way DUI driver resulted in fatal injuries, according to KRON.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 12:18 AM near the interchange of eastbound Highway 24 and northbound Interstate 680.
According to investigators, the crash began when a dark-colored Toyota RAV4 was seen traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-680 in Solano County. The driver continued into Contra Costa County, where the vehicle collided head-on with a white Dodge Challenger on the transition ramp between Highway 24 and I-680.
The driver of the Dodge, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 survived the crash and was transported to a hospital for treatment. CHP investigators later determined that the individual was under the influence at the time of the collision. Authorities say the driver will be booked into jail on charges of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter once medically cleared.
The crash caused the closure of the transition ramp for several hours. Crews worked to clear debris and investigate the scene, with the roadway reopening shortly after 8:30 AM.
CHP continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision and urges anyone with information to contact the Contra Costa-area office.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
