Visalia, CA – In the late afternoon of Thursday, May 1, 2025, a three-vehicle collision resulted in fatal injuries to one driver and the arrest of another on suspicion of DUI, according to KSEE.
The Visalia Police Department reports that the accident took place around 5:00 PM at the intersection of Burke Street and Kaweah Avenue.
Authorities say 26-year-old Omar Chavarria was driving eastbound on Kaweah Avenue when he allegedly failed to stop at a posted sign at Burke Street. His vehicle collided with two others in the intersection, causing significant damage.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported one of the drivers, an adult female whose name has not been released, to a local hospital. She later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the crash, Chavarria fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by officers a short time later. Investigators determined that alcohol may have contributed to the crash. Chavarria was taken into custody and is expected to face charges that could include vehicular manslaughter, DUI, and hit-and-run. Conviction on such charges can carry significant prison time under California law.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are urging any witnesses or individuals with information to contact the Visalia Police Department Traffic Unit.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
