Driver Arrested after Broad St Crash Injures a Bicyclist near Marigold Center in SLO

San Luis Obispo, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, a suspected DUI collision with a pickup truck left a bicyclist with moderate injuries, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department reports that the crash occurred around 10:00 PM near Broad Street and the Marigold Center.

Authorities say a victim was walking their bicycle in the bike lane when a pickup truck struck them, dragging both the individual and the bicycle approximately 30 feet down the street before coming to a stop. Emergency responders transported the bicyclist to a local hospital with injuries described as moderate but not life-threatening.

The driver of the pickup truck was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of narcotics. The identity of the driver has not been released at this time. Investigators have not indicated whether speed or additional factors contributed to the crash.

The collision remains under investigation. Police continue to remind drivers that cyclists and pedestrians have the same legal rights on the roadway as motor vehicles.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those injured in a bicycle accident, filing a Personal Injury claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
