Modesto, CA – On Saturday, May 3, 2025, 48-year-old Cheryl Spangler lost her life due to injuries received in a pedestrian collision two months prior, according to The Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place on the morning of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, around 7:20 AM near South Seventh Street and Blankenburg Avenue, an area that includes both residential properties and industrial operations, adjacent to Union Pacific Railroad freight tracks.
Spangler was found on the west dirt shoulder of South Seventh Street with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle believed to be a 2011 Honda SUV that left the area heading south. Emergency crews transported her to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where she remained under medical care until her death on May 3.
Authorities say the driver fled the scene following the crash. One week later, officers arrested 24-year-old Magali Sevilla in connection with the incident. She was charged with felony hit-and-run and later released on bail.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities indicate that additional charges may be considered in light of Spangler’s death.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
Statute of Limitations & Wrongful Death Claims
Victims of motor vehicle accidents typically have up to two years after the accident in order to file a claim. However, in a Wrongful Death Claim, that timer only starts after the victim has lost their life, which can happen well after the accident that caused their injuries.
