Alamo, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, April 17, 2025, a traffic collision resulted in a fatality after a loose tire from a Ford van struck a Toyota Tundra traveling on Interstate 680, according to Bay City News, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 1:35 PM near Stone Valley Road, when the left rear tire of the northbound Ford van detached and crossed over the center divider, striking the southbound Toyota Tundra.
The driver of the Tundra, who was the sole occupant, was killed instantly after the tire hit the vehicle’s windshield. The cause of the tire detaching from the van is still under investigation, though the driver of the van, along with a passenger, was not injured.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the van is cooperating with the investigation and that alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the incident.
CHP closed various lanes on both sides of the highway during the investigation and reopened them by late afternoon. The investigation is ongoing.
