Bakersfield, CA – Paula Alfaro of Bakersfield has been identified as the bicyclist who lost her life in a collision with a pickup truck on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 19, 2025, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 4:58 PM at the intersection of Oswell Street and Fervale Road.
Emergency responders arrived to find Alfaro severely injured before she was transported to Kern Medical for treatment. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
The driver of the 2024 GMC Sierra involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
A GoFundMe campaign created in her memory described Alfaro as someone who never judged others and always carried a spirit of light and laughter.
CHP stated that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the incident, and no arrests were made.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
Partial Liability in Bicycle Accidents
California Law does not consider bicyclists to have the right-of-way under all circumstances. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide bicyclists with a Duty of Care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is held only partially liable in a bicycle accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
