Fresno, CA – On the early morning of Wednesday, March 5, 2025, a wrong-way crash on Highway 168 resulted in the deaths of two people after their vehicle was engulfed in flames, according to KSEE and CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident occurred around 2:30 AM at the McKinley Avenue off-ramp from eastbound Highway 168.
Authorities say they began receiving reports of a dark-colored vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 168 near Herndon Avenue. Multiple callers described the car moving at high speeds in the fast lane before it reached the McKinley Avenue off-ramp, where it crashed.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle, identified as a 2005 Volvo, left the highway and struck a concrete barrier before catching fire. Emergency responders arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, first responders were unable to reach the occupants in time. Both individuals inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash led to the temporary closure of eastbound Highway 168 and the McKinley Avenue off-ramp as investigators examined the wreckage and crews worked to clear debris. Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased, pending notification of their families.
CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether impairment, speed, or other factors played a role.
