Modesto, CA – On the morning of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, a hit-and-run collision left 48-year-old Cheryl Spangler of Modesto with major injuries, according to The Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred around 7:20 AM on South Seventh Street, south of Blankenburg Avenue.
Emergency responders found Spangler lying on the west dirt shoulder of the road before transporting her by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. Details regarding the extent of her injuries were not released.
The crash took place in an area with a mix of industrial and residential properties near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
Authorities identified the driver as 24-year-old Magali Sevilla, also of Modesto. Investigators say Sevilla fled the scene in a gray 2011 Honda SUV, heading south. With assistance from the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force, CHP officers later located and arrested Sevilla on a felony hit-and-run charge.
Officials did not indicate whether drugs, alcohol, or other factors contributed to the crash.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those injured in a pedestrian accident, filing a Personal Injury Claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills and other related damages. Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage.
