March 16, Atwater, CA: A suspected DUI accident took the life of a pedestrian on a highway in Atwater on Sunday morning.
According to information provided by Your Central Valley, the incident actually consisted of two accidents and led to a pedestrian fatality. Around 4:10 a.m., Merced CHP was called to the scene of an accident, where they discovered that a 22-year-old man crashed his vehicle into a guardrail on Highway 99 around the area of Westside Boulevard. A good Samaritan adult male went to check on the man and his passengers when he witnessed the accident.
While the pedestrian was checking on the initial crash, he was struck by a 23-year-old driver in a Honda Civic who initially struck the vehicle and then the man, who was out of his car at the time.
The male pedestrian was tragically pronounced dead on scene as a result of traumatic injuries. The female driver in the second vehicle, as well as two passengers, were hospitalized with injuries.
Police claim that both the first and second driver were arrested on suspicion of DUI.
No further details have been released but CHP continues to investigate the circumstances of the accident at this time.
