Modesto Bicyclist Jose De Jesus Munoz Casillas, 61, Killed in Crash at Sylvan Ave, Wood Sorrel Dr

Modesto, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Jose De Jesus Munoz Casillas, 61, was killed after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle, according to The Modesto Bee.

The Modesto Police Department reports that the accident occurred around 7:36 PM at the intersection of Sylvan Avenue and Wood Sorrel Drive.

Emergency responders arrived to find Casillas in the roadway with severe injuries. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined that a white Scion XB was traveling westbound on Sylvan Avenue when it struck Casillas, who was crossing the street northbound near the intersection. Authorities have not confirmed whether Casillas was in a crosswalk or if lighting conditions played a role.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No arrests or citations have been issued at this time.

The Modesto Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the cause of the collision. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.

Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
