With many crossing intersections and major highways such as El Camino Real and California 1, traffic is high throughout certain times of the day. With more individuals choosing to walk from one destination to the next in San Luis Obispo and beyond, it is no surprise that pedestrian accidents are on the rise. The issue of these accidents is not always simple to address, as drivers are not always looking out for these vulnerable parties.
Motorists engaging in reckless acts such as distracted driving and driving under the influence are more likely to strike pedestrians within seconds. When a pedestrian is involved in an accident with a hit-and-run driver, they are more likely to miss out on medical treatment opportunities. This means that a pedestrian could be left with serious injuries or lose their life due to a traumatic collision.
Pedestrian Accident Involving Hit-and-Run Driver in San Luis Obispo
A hit-and-run pedestrian accident took place in San Luis Obispo on Saturday evening. According to a KSBY report, the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Santa Rosa Street and Higuera Street on August 19, 2023.
San Luis Obispo Police confirmed that the accident happened when an adult male was struck by a vehicle due to reasons that are not entirely known. The suspect fled the scene of the accident in their vehicle without stopping for the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, who has only been identified as a 65-year-old man, was critically injured in the accident. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency care but his current condition is not yet known.
Police blocked off a portion of the road in the area for some time after the accident for their investigation.
No further details have been released but San Luis Obispo Police are still investigating and searching for the responsible driver.
Offering Support to Victims Following a San Luis Obispo Pedestrian Accident
Due to how severe some injuries are in pedestrian accidents, it can take a long time for a victim to recover when they have been hurt. As the victim of a pedestrian accident, you may spend time in the hospital and accrue bills that you cannot keep up with. On top of this, you may not be able to return to work for some time, which can affect your life physically and financially.
Because some hit-and-run drivers are never caught by police, pedestrians may wonder what options they have. A victim still has a chance to recover under what is known as uninsured motorist coverage. A pedestrian also has the option to bring a claim against an at-fault party if the driver has been apprehended.
