When Are Patients Sent to a Riverside County Trauma Center?

Traumatic injuries are the result of powerful impact forces, penetrating or blunt, that leave victims in need of immediate medical attention. These are severe, often life-threatening injuries caused by things like burns, gunshots, falls, car accidents, and other serious incidents.

Victims are assessed and rushed to Trauma Centers to give them the best chance of survival. Trauma Centers are an extension of Hospital Emergency Departments that receive Trauma designation for the advanced skills of their doctors and nurses. Trauma Centers should also have access to advanced equipment and tools to better treat patients with severe injuries.

Trauma Centers are certified by Local Emergency Medical Services Agencies (LEMSA). They are categorized into levels I, II, II, and IV with Level I being the highest designation. There are also designations for pediatric trauma centers designed to deliver life-saving care to child victims.
