Hit-and-run accidents are all too common in San Jose. Offenders need to realize the harm they do when they hit a vehicle, a pedestrian, or a bicyclist and then flee the scene.
Victims can be left waiting on urgent medical care until someone else comes along and notices the victim and calls 911. In that time, the victim left in the roadway can suffer additional impacts from motorists who approach the scene unaware of what’s happened. And finally, victims and their family members may have to try to cover thousands of dollars in medical bills on their own if the at-fault driver doesn’t come forward.
Woman Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in San Jose Bicycle Accident
A woman riding a bike near downtown San Jose Monday night was struck by a hit-and-run driver and badly injured. The Mercury News reported that the heartbreaking accident occurred on North 1st Street near the 880 Freeway entrance on April 10, 2023.
San Jose Police tweeted about the accident at around 9:30 p.m. They say the female bicyclist was rushed to the hospital with what were thought to be life-threatening injuries. A later update said that the victim had been stabilized and that her injuries were now considered non-life-threatening.
San Jose Police investigators confirmed that the driver believed to have caused the accident did not remain at the scene. Officers are still on the lookout for a hit-and-run suspect. So far investigators have not released a description of the driver or car involved. If you have any information about this pedestrian accident, please contact the San Jose Police Department.
Support for Victims After a San Jose Bicycle Accident
Victims of bicycle accidents should receive support as they make the difficult journey to full recovery. They’ll need help with paying every medical bill now and the bills for care that may be needed in the years ahead. They must also receive assistance in replacing the paychecks they lose out on while they can’t go in to work.
Hit-and-run drivers will likely be facing a criminal trial once they are arrested. Fortunately, families don’t have to wait on the results of a trial to seek financial support from the suspect’s car insurance. The victim’s injury claim can be submitted as soon as it’s ready. It’s a civil claim and could be settled at any point, no matter where criminal proceedings stand.
In cases where a hit-and-run driver is, unfortunately, never located, victims can still seek out help with their recovery expenses. They can file a claim with their own car insurance companies, under their uninsured motorist coverage.
