Big Rig Accident Dangers on Hwy 58 in Bakersfield CA

White Semi Truck and Tractor Trailer represents a Bakersfield truck accident risk.

Traffic tie-ups and construction delays on the major highways around Bakersfield often leave motorists vulnerable to approaching traffic. Drivers may see slowed traffic ahead and hit the brakes, but there’s no guarantee that a motorist following behind will also notice the changing conditions and slow down.

A careless driver can strike multiple cars from behind. When a truck driver fails to stop for a traffic delay, the results can be even more devastating. The extra weight and size of a big rig can do additional harm to those in smaller cars and SUVs. Victims can quickly be in jeopardy of losing their lives.

Big Rig Causes Deadly Multi-Vehicle Accident in Bakersfield

A truck driver failed to brake in time causing a deadly chain-reaction accident Thursday afternoon in Bakersfield. KGET-TV reports the multi-vehicle accident occurred along Highway 58 near H Street on March 2, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the westbound lanes shortly before 4 p.m. They determined that a truck driver in a Kenworth Semi failed to brake to avoid hitting a group of stopped vehicles on the highway.

They say the Kenworth first rear-ended a GMC Sierra, then overturned a Toyota pickup truck. The Kenworth big rig continued on to strike the tractor-trailer of a Volvo semi, knocking it into a Peterbilt semi. The CHP reported that at one point one of the vehicles caught fire.

The drivers of the GMC Sierra and the Kenworth were rushed to Kern Medical with severe injuries. Tragically, the driver of the GMC later died.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the crash. They don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in what happened.

Finding Support for Families After a Major Bakersfield Truck Accident

Families will never be able to replace the loss of a loved one, but they do need to act to protect themselves from the financial harm a major accident can do.

Families of victims might face funeral costs, emergency response fees, and hospital bills in a matter of days. These expenses will arrive just as close relatives lose the weekly income the deceased had always provided.

To help with these enormous economic responsibilities, close family members must file a wrongful death claim. This claim filed against the driver’s commercial truck insurance would help with all of the hardships a family faces after a tragic accident. A Bakersfield Truck Accident Lawyer would also help investigate whether the truck driver’s employer should also be held liable for the family’s expenses and losses.

It’s possible that a trucking company can be held fully liable for a truck accident victim. However, trucking companies will have access to teams of lawyers all paid to help limit the financial support victims and their families receive.
