Drivers on the busy Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach can experience bumper-to-bumper traffic and have to watch out for reckless speeders and many careless drivers. Far too often, motorists are also placed in the middle of a dangerous situation when a suspect attempts to evade a police traffic stop.
Drivers may not be able to get out of a fleeing driver’s path until it’s too late. Injured victims and the families of those killed in these accidents can wonder how they can receive justice and recovery support after such a tragedy.
Suspect Who Fled from Seal Beach Police Charged with Second-Degree Murder
A woman was killed in a Long Beach collision caused by a suspect involved in a police chase on Tuesday night. Patch reported the accident occurred along the Pacific Coast Highway near the Second Street exit on March 28, 2023.
Investigators say it began when Seal Beach Police stopped a woman driving a 2006 Lexus near the intersection of the Pacific Coast Highway and Marina Drive. While officers conducted a records check, they say the driver switched seats with a 39-year-old man and the man sped away.
A chase ensued up the PCH until the driver crashed into several other cars in Long Beach near the Marina Pacifica Shopping area. A 74-year-old female passenger in one of the vehicles was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Three adults were also injured in the crash. An infant girl was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The 39-year-old driver of the Lexus, from Antioch, tried to flee the scene on foot but was tasered and arrested. He was charged with second-degree murder on Thursday and also faces several other felony charges.
Support for Victims and Family Members After a Long Beach Accident
Family members of victims killed in police chase-involved accidents may lose a loved one and immediately be faced with costly financial obligations. The bills for funeral and burial costs and leftover medical fees could come due in a matter of days. Families would also endure the loss of the guidance and weekly income the deceased would have provided close relatives with in the years ahead.
A wrongful death claim is filed against an at-fault driver’s insurance company to help earn spouses and children and other family members the support they need to protect their futures.
Surviving victims are also permitted to file an injury claim that seeks reimbursement for every medical cost they receive. An insurance settlement should also replace the lost wages and benefits a victim has forfeited while missing work.
A suspect in a police chase and accident may face a criminal trial, but that won’t delay a victim’s or a family’s right to file an accident claim. This civil claim can be filed and families can receive settlement support even if a suspect is still awaiting trial.
