Driving in California is usually an enjoyable experience, especially in Fresno County. The lush greenery that covers the area provides a gorgeous backdrop for driving, with numerous opportunities to enjoy the peace and solitude of the Central Valley. However, the climate and weather patterns that give Fresno County this beauty can also sometimes make driving difficult, especially after a period of rain.
One Killed After Wet Roads Causes Accident in Fresno County
A 22-year-old woman was killed after the car she was ejected from the passenger seat of the car she was riding in due to an accident caused by wet road conditions along San Benito Avenue in Fresno County. The accident occurred shortly after 3:30 PM on Thursday, December 29, 2022 west of Panoche Road on San Benito Avenue, according to a report from KGPE.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the crash after receiving reports of an accident. Investigators say the driver, a 20-year-old man from Davis, was heading south on San Benito Avenue when speed and rainy conditions caused him to lose control of the car, veering right into a nearby field where the car overturned. The accident ejected the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers and the driver were also injured in the accident and were transported to nearby medical facilities with moderate to severe injuries.
CHP is still investigating the cause of the accident and says that drugs nor alcohol factored into the crash. They are still working to confirm whether the deceased woman was wearing her seatbelt but were able to preliminarily determine that the wet conditions were the main cause of the accident.
Dangers of Wet Roads in Fresno County
One of Fresno County’s most distinguishing characteristics is its climate. While it is fairly stable, there is substantial rainfall due to the surrounding forests and farmlands. According to data from the National Weather Service, the Fresno area has averaged around 4.6 inches of precipitation between October and December of this year.
Driving in wet conditions is obviously much more dangerous than driving under normal conditions, decreasing visibility and making controlling your car more difficult. This can lead to accidents like the one above, in which you or a loved one could be seriously injured or even killed. While dangerous, there are some ways that you can avoid or at least reduce the risk of an accident when driving on wet roads in Fresno County, such as
- Driving at the speed limit or a bit slower.
- Maximizing visibility by using headlights and windshield wipers.
- Carefully driving to avoid speed changes or sudden braking.
