Accidents Involving Drunk Drivers on Hwy 101 In Santa Margarita CA

Major highways in San Luis Obispo County carry hazards at any hour of the day. Sometimes being off the roadway isn’t enough to protect motorists from reckless and drunk drivers.

Drivers under the influence can leave their lanes and strike a car in another lane or even a car that’s been disabled on the side of the road. This terrible loss of control can cause devastating injuries and quickly threaten lives.

Weekend Rear-End Collision Kills Two and Injures Four Outside Santa Margarita

A tragic crash west of Santa Margarita on Saturday night claimed two lives and injured four other victims. The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports the accident took place on Highway 101 just south of Santa Barbara Road on April 16, 2022.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene in the northbound lanes shortly after 8 p.m. Investigators say A 21-year-old man was driving a Suburban over the 65-mile-per-hour speed limit when he lost control. The Suburban swerved into the shoulder and struck the rear of a sedan parked off the road. The impact sent the sedan 120 feet.

In all, there were five people in the sedan. The crash killed a 47-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man in the sedan. The driver of the sedan and two other passengers received major injuries and were rushed to the hospital. All of those involved in the crash are from Santa Maria.

The driver of the Suburban was arrested after the accident. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the collision. The 21-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Finding Help for San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County Victims

The families of accident victims tragically killed can face the costs of a funeral almost immediately after a collision. They must often turn to a wrongful death claim filed against an at-fault driver’s car insurance company to prevent a financial disaster. This claim would also seek to earn the family money in the future when they’d be without the income the victim can no longer provide.

For surviving victims, an insurance claim is the best way to ensure they don’t pay for their own medical care out of pocket. They should be supported through every medical procedure and earn full reimbursement for their lost income at work.

A drunk driving suspect may be facing criminal charges, but a civil claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance provider can move forward at any time. The criminal trial will proceed separately.
