Courthouse Bay Water Contamination

Courthouse Bay is a part of Camp Lejeune. It’s the home of the Marine Corp Engineer School along with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion plus the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion. The Courthouse Bay facility is mostly self-sufficient, and it includes its own water supply system. What comes to issue is that if you served in the military at Camp Lejeune, the water supply system at Courthouse Bay may have been contaminated with toxic chemicals like the following:

  • Perchloroethylene (PCE)
  • Trichloroethylene (TCE)
  • Vinyl Chloride.

Camp Lejeune Contaminated Water Connection with Cancers and Illnesses

Between 1963 and 1957, people who lived and worked at Camp Lejeune unknowingly drank, bathed in, cooked with and otherwise used water that was contaminated with the above chemicals. The extent of the contamination was hundreds or even thousands of times of the exposure limits that were previously set by the environmental protection agency. There appears to be a connection between PCE, TCE, benzene and vinyl chloride and the following cancers or conditions: Here are some examples of just a few of them:

  • Lung, kidney, liver, bladder, esophageal and breast cancer.
  • Adult leukemia.
  • Aplastic anemia.
  • Multiple myeloma.
  • Renal toxicity.
  • Birth defects.
  • Female infertility.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act

On August 10, 2022, President Joe Biden signed off on the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. It allows Camp Lejeune veterans, their family members who lived on the base with them and civilian personnel who worked there to sue the federal government for damages caused to them by contaminated Camp Lejune water. Eligible litigants need only have been at Camp Lejeune for 30 days between August 1, 1953 and December 31, 1987. Veterans must be honorably discharged, and the 30-day requirement need not be consecutive days. Even en-utero or wrongful death cases are contemplated under the new law.

If you believe that you’re eligible for compensation for your cancer or medical condition under this recently enacted legislation, you must act quickly. New lawsuit filings are permitted until August 10, 2024. After that, you’ll be barred from filing by the statute of limitations. If you want to proceed, you’ll be in need of an experienced and assertive Camp Lejeune Justice Act lawyer.
