6 Common Symptoms of a Brain Injury

After an injury, it can be hard to separate what symptoms are normal and what are abnormal. Several symptoms may seem harmless on their own, but when combined, they could mean you have a bigger issue. If you’ve hit your head, it could be a brain injury and is something that may need medical attention. When it comes to your health, don’t hesitate.

Cause and Effect

The brain is cushioned from everyday activities by the fluid inside your skull. A blow to the head makes your brain slide and push against your skull, which can cause swelling and bleeding.

The scalp and forehead are rich in blood supply, so an injury to this area could result in bleeding under the skin. Bleeding in one area causes bruising and swelling. How quickly your body reacts depends on the speed of the accident and the force that’s involved. At first, it may not be obvious there’s been a brain injury, so it’s important to be vigilant.

Symptoms of a Brain Injury

Experiencing a headache, feeling dizzy or confused and fatigue are symptoms that usually present themselves first but resolve themselves over time. This is considered a mild concussion and should be monitored for improvement. Other warning signs include:

  • Balance
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Mood changes
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Slurred speech
  • Delay in responses

A More Serious Note

Of course, having the symptoms of a concussion can be worrisome, but if they improve over the course of a few days, it doesn’t sound like a traumatic brain injury. Of course, if you’re concerned you should always consult with your doctor for peace of mind. Some symptoms you should look out for that indicate something more than a mild concussion are:

  • Sensitivity to lights and sounds
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Difficulty waking
  • Weakness in your arms, legs or face
  • Problems remembering and concentrating
  • Bad taste in your mouth or a loss of taste and smell

If you suspect a concussion or other brain injury, do not perform any vigorous activity before seeing a doctor.
