Water Contamination at the Rifle Range at Camp Lejeune

Out of eight water supply systems at Camp Lejeune, three of them were found to be contaminated with dangerous chemical solvents. Those were the systems at Hadnot Point, Tarawa Terrace and Holcomb Boulevard. Those three systems provided much of the water that Marines, their family members and civilian employees consumed. Although the rifle range at Camp Lejeune had its own water supply, that supply was determined to be satisfactory. As per the contaminated systems, more than 70 contaminants were found in them. The four most concerning contaminants follow:

  • Trichlorethylene (TCE)
  • Perchloroethylene (PCE)
  • Vinyl chloride.

Causes of Camp Lejeune Water Contamination

Although Camp Lejeune opened early in World War II, it wasn’t until about 40 years later that was discovered that the water there was contaminated with carcinogens. People who drank, bathed in, cooked with or otherwise used the water were at a substantially increased risk of developing cancer or other physical illnesses. The contamination was traced back to off-site and on-site dry-cleaning businesses, leaking underground storage tanks, industrial sites and otherwise poor waste disposal practices. This poisoning has been linked to the following cancers and physical conditions:

  • Brain, esophageal, lung, breast, kidney, liver, cervical, ovarian and other cancers.
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • Parkinson’s disease.
  • Aplastic anemia.
  • Multiple myeloma.
  • Female infertility.
  • Birth defects.
  • Wrongful deaths.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act

Veterans, their family members and civilian employees who developed cancer or other serious illnesses as a result to toxic water at Camp Lejeune are now able to pursue personal injury lawsuits seeking compensation for the damages that they suffered pursuant to the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.  If a family member died as a result of a cancer or other serious illness that has been linked to the toxic Camp Lejeune water, a wrongful death case can be brought on his or her behalf.

Damages That Can be Sought

Like other personal injury cases, victims of Camp Lejeune water contamination are compensated financially. Eligible victims are allowed to pursue the following damages under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.

  • Past and future medical bills.
  • Past and future lost earnings.
  • Any disability or disfigurement.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Emotional anguish.
  • Other valuable damages in the event of a wrongful death.
